SUMMARY:Brown Bag: A Deep Foundation Primer
DESCRIPTION:As a structural engineer\, when is it a good idea to use driven pipe pile as opposed to H-Pile to support a structure? \n\nIf the answer is not immediately obvious\, there may be some benefit to attending this short review of the subject.\n\nThis will be a discussion of various deep foundation systems used in the area and some advantages and disadvantages of each system. Examples of various options will be presented\, as well as some unique applications. We will cover the following deep foundation systems:\n\n\n	Driven Pipe Pile\, and H-Pile\n	Steel Sheet Pile\n	Caissons and Drilled Piers\n\n\n\n	Micropile\, with permanent steel casing or hollow bar micropile\n	Helical Piers\n\n \n\nSpeakers: Mike Moeller has a bachelor of Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota (1974). He is the president of Atlas Foundation Company and president of Structural Anchor Supply\, the distributor of Chance helical products for nine states in the Upper Midwest. \n\n \n\nBen Hermanson\, P.E. has been an application engineer for Atlas Foundation Company and Structural Anchor Supply since 2006. Ben holds a B.A. degree from Simpson College\, Indianola\, IA\, and B.S. and M.S. degrees in civil engineering\, with an emphasis in geotechnical engineering\, from Iowa State University\, Ames\, IA.
